The Power of Citrus Scents

Juice up your home with fruity fragrance.

Oranges, lemons and limes smell great, taste great, even look great — and they’re good for you too. No wonder they’ve been coveted by people throughout history, from the East Asians, who first cultivated the orange, to Columbus, who is said to have carefully carried orange and lemon seeds across the Atlantic. These days, it’s a lot easier to bring the pleasures of citrus into your own home. Try some of these ideas.

Get Some Scents-A-Peel

Give your home a fresh, sweet scent by simmering lemon peels in a pot of water on the stove. Studies show that lemon fragrance increases productivity, which means you’ll get more done in less time. Don’t have time to peel fruit? Burn a citrus-scented candle instead.

Make a Fantastic Orange Fizzy

Amaze your kids with this neat trick: Add ¼ teaspoon baking soda to an 8-ounce glass of orange juice and watch it fizz like crazy. It’s safe to drink and gives a boost of vitamin C!

Soak Yourself Smooth

Homemade bath salts will leave your skin soft and smelling good. Combine 1 cup sea salt and 2 cups Epsom salts in a bowl and mix well. Add a couple of drops of orange food coloring, if desired, and mix well. Sprinkle with five drops of orange essential oil and ¼ teaspoon glycerin (sold at many crafts stores). Stir well. Run a warm bath and add some of this mixture under the flowing water, then slip in and relax.

Grow Great Garnishes

Plant some lemon or orange mint (delicious in iced tea) or lemon basil (yummy on pizzas and pastas). Don’t have a garden? Grow these herbs in containers on a sunny windowsill instead.

Keep Clothes Smelling Fresh

To make a citrus sachet, sprinkle a drop or two of orange or lemon essential oil on some cotton balls and tie them up in a handkerchief. Tuck it into drawers or cupboards. Or, if you’re pressed for time, slip in a citrus-scented dryer sheet.

I really like the fruity scents but I find the citrus blends to be especially uplifting.
