Make Over Your Attitude Toward Weight Loss

Best-selling author Bob Greene explains how refining your mental approach is the vital first step in successful dieting.

If losing weight tops your list of New Year’s resolutions yet again, it may be time to take a hard look at what has undermined your goal in the past. The key to weight loss, says Bob Greene, best-selling author of The Best Life Diet, is to first make over your expectations and approach. It requires a major shift in attitude, Greene says, but ultimately leads to long-term success.

Be happy first Many people think dropping pounds will make them happy, but this simply isn’t the case. “Take the focus off just losing the weight,” Greene says. “It’s a complete reversal of how most people think, but you need to be happy first and do things to nurture yourself.”

Take the language class you’ve always wanted to take. Start healing the broken relationships in your life. Examine where your stress originates. It’s all part of understanding what you are really looking for — and what you think losing weight is going to change.

Adopt the slow-and-steady approach Successful weight loss isn’t about immediate gratification, Greene says. Rather than focusing on reaching a certain dress size or number on the scale, start by thinking of small, permanent ways to change your lifestyle. “There are no weight-loss miracles, quick fixes or shortcuts,” Greene adds. “Success means developing healthy habits that will help over the long term and are built into your lifestyle.”

Embrace exercise One absolutely essential habit to develop is getting your body in motion. For many people, exercise is a major mental hurdle, but, according to Greene, avoiding it is one of the classic weight-loss mistakes. “Put it into your head that you are going to be an active person,” he says. Then pick a workout you enjoy or can easily incorporate into your life. Even the busiest person wastes 20 minutes a day — time that could be used for a brisk walk, a bike ride or yoga, Greene says.
