Boost Your Brainpower

You try to exercise regularly to look and feel your best. But did you know that your brain could also benefit from a regular workout?
Indeed, research shows that your brain grows stronger when you perform mental activities such as memorizing phone numbers, learning a new dance step or completing a crossword puzzle. The brain is made up of more than 100 billion cells that communicate information through a complex system of connections called synapses. Each time you stimulate a portion of your brain by learning new information, your synapses multiply. The more frequently you engage different parts of your brain, especially in new and challenging ways, the more synaptic networks grow.
Your brain also needs a balanced diet and a low-stress, physically active lifestyle to function optimally. “The best advice is to keep an open mind,” advises Majid Fotuhi, M.D., director of the Center for Memory and Brain Health at Baltimore’s Sinai Hospital. “Living your life with an attitude that you are willing to learn anything at any time is one of the best ways to keep your brain young and healthy.”
