Here’s an easy way to make your own candles. Fill a shoe box with damp, clean sand. Use your fingers to make a hole in the sand in an interesting shape (don’t dig all the way to the bottom). Then place a wire rack in a large pot and place an empty coffee can on the rack. Add enough water around the can to fill the pot halfway, and bring it to a gentle boil. Place paraffin wax (available at craft stores) or old candle stubs in the coffee can, then stir until the wax is completely melted. Meanwhile, wrap a candlewick (available at craft stores) around a pencil and tape into place. Balance the pencil across the top of the shoe box, letting one end of the wick fall into the hole in the sand. Pour the melted wax into the hole. When it hardens, clip the wick to about ½ inch, pull the candle out, brush off the excess sand and light.
