Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to some of the ones we're most often asked.
- How can a product be labeled 0 grams of trans fat when it still contains partially hydrogenated oil?
-
Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil describes a broad range of oils with varying degrees of hydrogenation or hardening. The trans fat levels in these oils can vary from very little to higher amounts. A very small amount of partially hydrogenated oil may be used in a product to provide structure and texture. Products which contain a small amount of trans fat (amounts less than 0.5 g per serving) can be labeled, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s nutrition labeling guidelines, as 0 g trans fat per serving.
- What’s the difference between a margarine and a soft spread?
-
People often separate soft spreads from regular margarine or stick margarine because the nutritional composition may be different. Soft spreads are usually lower in saturated and trans fat. Soft spreads typically contain less fat per serving than stick margarine –between 50-60% fat—and are made with a blend of vegetable oils like canola, soybean, olive and sunflower. Soft spreads may also contain other nutrients such as vitamin E and vitamin A and may be enriched with vitamin D and calcium.According to FDA standards, regular margarine must contain at least 80% fat, which can be from oils such as corn, safflower, soybean or sunflower. Margarine must also contain at least 10% vitamin A and may include optional ingredients such as vitamin D.
