Even preschoolers can learn fiscal responsibility. Explain the difference between denominations (some kids mistakenly believe that a big nickel is worth more than a little dime). Deliver their weekly allowance in dimes or quarters, and let them distribute the money among brightly colored jars marked “savings” “spending,” and “charity.” Let them select a toy or treat that will take several weeks’ savings to purchase. They’ll learn how good it feels to save for what they want, and they’ll value the item more.
