Summer Vacation Trends

The summer vacation is a cherished tradition for many Americans. In fact, research from the travel Website TripAdvisor reports that 90% of Americans are planning some type of leisure travel during the summer months, despite the sluggish economy.
”Travelers are bullish about their summer vacations — this has been a tough year, and people want to relax and unplug,“ says Brooke Ferencsik, a TripAdvisor spokesperson. Still, some vacationers are modifying their plans. According to the survey, half of travelers say fuel prices will affect their activities — 37% of them will take fewer trips and 18% will take shorter trips.
Americans may fly slightly less frequently (airlines expect a drop of about 1% in passenger numbers). However, more fliers will leave the country. There are an estimated 25.1 million Americans who are planning international travel (an increase of 2.6% over last year), even though the weak U.S. dollar means they’ll spend 5.7% more to do so than they did last summer. To this end, about a third of vacationers are selecting destinations based on favorable exchange rates. China and India are expected to see the biggest increases in U.S. tourists, though Canada and Mexico remain the most popular international destinations.
