Spring Break? Pack Your Sun Protection
How to shield your skin from dangerous damage

The good news on cancer is that many types are on the decline. But one kind is increasing: melanoma, the most serious kind of skin cancer. As the weather warms and you head outside, remember this advice from the American Academy of Dermatology:
- Generously apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Wear protective clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- Stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
- Avoid tanning beds.
- Do an annual skin self-check. If you notice any changes, see your dermatologist.
