Preparing Your Child for Preschool

9 steps to a smooth first day

Depending on how you approach it, the first day of school can be an anxiety-filled ordeal or an exciting rite of passage. Here, the experts at ClubMom offer ways to manage your preschooler’s expectations and make sure she’s prepared.

  • A few weeks before school starts, read your child stories about the first day of school. This will give her the opportunity to ask questions and adjust to the idea that she’ll be going to school soon.
  • Attend an open house or get-acquainted day at school. If this event doesn’t exist, schedule an appointment to take a tour of the school building with your child and introduce him to his new teacher.
  • Talk with the teacher to give her insight into your child’s personality and what he responds to. Also point out any special needs he may have.
  • Take care of all registration prerequisites — including immunizations and medical forms — before the first day of school.
  • Teach your child important safety information. For example, make sure she commits her full name and phone number to memory.
  • Pack stay-at-school supplies in a bag that can also stay at school. The teacher may have additional requirements, but be sure to include a tissue box, diapers, wipes, smock, nap mat and a complete change of clothes.
  • The night before school starts, remind her of what’s going to happen in the morning and respond to any questions or comments she may have.
  • Even if you can’t do so every day, try to bring your child to school personally on the first day and say your good-byes there. Let him get used to the environment before you leave, and remind him that you’ll be reunited soon. Allowing him to keep a security object with him can also be helpful.
  • Prepare yourself for the possibility that your child will have a hard time separating, and assure yourself that some tears are normal. Don’t be embarrassed to check in with your child’s school for a progress report during the first few days.
