Let’s Get Physical

Check out these fitness recommendations from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) to find out if your children are getting the right amount of exercise.

Infants (0–2) — No time-specific recommendations are given for this age. Infants should interact with their parents and/or caregivers in daily physical activities that promote the exploration of their environment.

Toddlers (2–3) — Kids in this age group should be getting at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity (organized games) and 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity (free play) per day.

Preschoolers (3–4) — At this age, kids should be getting at least 60 minutes of structured physical activity and 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity per day.

School-age kids and teens (5+) — Although each district sets its own requirements, children in elementary school should be receiving at least 150 minutes of instructional physical education per week, and students in middle and high school should be receiving at least 225 minutes per week.

If your school-age kids aren’t getting the appropriate allotment of activity, try to supplement those hours outside of school. Encourage them to join a sports league, or if your kids aren’t into sports, research the local gyms in your area to see if any of them have teen-specific programs. With activities tailored to them such as “exergaming” and marshal arts classes, these gyms provide a creative way for your kids to stay fit.
