Fabric Maintenance — Curtains and Sofas and Rugs, Oh My!

Keeping curtains, rugs, upholstery and other fabrics in your home clean and spot-free can be a challenge, especially if you have children and pets. To make sure your fabrics look their best, follow these tips from Chris Allsbrooks, textile analyst for the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute.

Rugs

Vacuum regularly and use a steam cleaner at least once a year (or more often if you have pets). You can have floor coverings professionally cleaned or do it yourself by renting steam cleaners from grocery stores. If you intend to steam clean frequently, you may want to consider buying your own machine (prices start at about $100).

Curtains/Drapes

Window treatments can be a magnet for dirt and particles in the air, such as residue from candles and fireplaces. At least once a month, run a vacuum nozzle or dusting attachment up and down both sides of your curtains. You should also have your window treatments professionally cleaned once a year. “The best way to save money is by extending the life of your curtains and drapes for as long as possible,” Allsbrooks says.

Sofas/Chairs

Use washable slipcovers whenever possible. For stains, dilute a couple of ounces of dishwashing detergent in a gallon of water and gently blot (rubbing can distort fibers). Check the fabric cleaning code label on your upholstered furniture for a “W” for water, or “SW” for solvent and/or water, to make sure the material will accept this water-based stain solution. Then use a hairdryer on its low-medium setting to dry the area. (Start at the outside edges and move towards the center to prevent rings from developing.) Many carpet cleaners also service upholstery, so ask yours about stubborn stains or general cleaning.
