Thoughtful Gift-Giving

Six busy moms share secrets from their arsenal of creative gift ideas.

The person who has everything: We’ve all got them in our circle of friends and family. And when the holidays come, we often get stuck when we come to that person’s name on our shopping list. Dread no more: These real-life solutions will help you find the perfect present for even the most challenging of recipients.

Rachel R. of Ipswich, Mass. is a freelance writer and mother of three young children. “A few years ago, I gave one of my girlfriends a six-month sponsorship through the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (cfcusa.org) for a little boy from Mexico,” Rachel says. “I also sponsored a little girl from Kenya, and we’ve been ‘raising’ our kids together. Now we swap letters and pictures of them with each other.” Another gift to consider: “I love wine.com and often buy unusual wines from Argentina,” she says.

Mel R. of Sherborn, Mass. is also a mother of three, and juggles life as a mom and as one of the country’s foremost life coaches. She has three suggestions: taking a fun photo and putting it on a mug; sending potted amaryllis or narcissus bulbs with a bag of beautiful stones; and getting a bottle of wine and creating a special holiday label for it.

Alex, a thirty-something mother of twin toddlers and an editor in New York, favors buying museum memberships. “I figure it’s something a lot of people won’t buy for themselves, and that the money goes to a good cause.” Best of all, this gift can purchased through the click of a mouse!

Shawna M., from Beverly Farms, Mass. another busy mom, has previously sent her uncle a bacon-of-the-month-club membership, and funny superhero-themed toys that he can keep on his desk.

Linda G. of Brookline, Mass. runs a business, and lives with her young adopted daughter Alex, from China. For friends who have everything, she writes a check in that person’s name to China Care (chinacare.org), an organization that promotes the adoption of special-needs children.

For friends and family who are welcoming a new baby or pet to the family, Alicia K., mother of two on Long Island suggests commissioning a portrait. Make it a surprise by sneaking a photo and then supplying Jean Townsend (looloopaintingcompany.com) with your favorite shot. She’ll transform it into an oil painting.
