Holiday Desserts with a Twist
Reinvent classic sweets with these tips
Pies, cakes and cookies are the perfect endings to holiday meals. But if you’ve been making the same desserts the same way for years, why not bake something a little different? These delicious tips will do the trick:
- Use chopped macadamia nuts or pistachios rather than walnuts or pecans in your favorite holiday breads and cookies.
- Sprinkle crushed candy canes on holiday pies and cookies.
- Add a splash of your favorite liqueur to the cream while whipping the topping for your holiday dessert.
- Bake your favorite pecan pie recipe in a 13-by-9-inch baking pan instead of a pie plate, then cut into bars. They make a great gift.
- Add a few drops of almond, coconut, lemon or orange extract to frostings or icing to decorate cookies.
- Top fruit with this easy crisp topping: Combine 1 cup flour with ¾ cup sugar, ½ tsp. cinnamon and ½ cup mayonnaise. With fingers, gently squeeze flour mixture to form crumbs and sprinkle over fruit. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.
