Great Gift Ideas

Make an impression with a creative present

Whoever said “it’s not the money, it’s the thought that counts&rdquo was absolutely right. But it can be tough to come up with alternatives to the same old necktie or perfume set without dropping a bundle. Fear not: We’ve got suggestions for everyone on your list, from finicky friends to the husband who has everything. By picking out presents they’ll actually love (and use), you’ll make every penny count.

For Your Husband

Face it: If your man gets any more golf paraphernalia, he’ll have enough to open his own pro shop. Steer clear of the sports aisle and surprise him with something out of the ordinary. Why not pick up tickets to a football game or a concert? He’ll appreciate that you put in the thought — plus, if you promise him dinner beforehand (or a tailgate buffet), you’ll get in some quality time too.

For the Hostess

There’s no law that says you must buy wine as a hostess gift. Why not put together a morning-after package for your hostess and her hubby? Include muffins, a bag of coffee and pairs of his-and-hers slippers. Ten dollars says your gift is the only one they’ll still remember the next day.

For Your Kids

Don’t fill your playroom with more neglected toys. Instead, give your children something fun that will hold their attention, such as a dollhouse-making kit or an age-appropriate airplane-construction set. You’ll win on value, and it will give the two of you a project to enjoy together for months.

For Your Mother-in-Law

Don’t sweat what to get the mother-in-law with discerning taste and critical tongue. Instead of buying her a bathrobe that will just sit in her closet, go to a spa and pick up a gift certificate. Every woman loves to be pampered, no matter how picky she might seem. You’ll impress your mother-in-law (a million-dollar feat!) for the price of a manicure.

For Your Friends

You’ve been buying presents for your best friend since college. There isn’t a thing you haven’t gotten her. Skip the throwaway trinkets and order her a month’s worth of laundry service or a session with a housekeeper. You’ll get a great present at a low cost. And thanks to all the free time she’ll have, maybe you two can finally enjoy that long overdue lunch.
