Thick, long-sleeved layers under a sweater will make your arms look heavy. Instead, try a lightweight T-shirt or sleeveless turtleneck underneath a belted sweater coat. The belt will define your waist and keep you from looking bulky.
I invest in beautiful, warm scarves in wool or cashmere. They last from season to season and make every outfit look better.

For me, the best investment I ever made was in silk long underwear. As a plus size woman, I can ill afford the bulk of layers and silk is so thin but warms like you would not believe. It wears like iron, hand washes like a dream and dries overnite.

Before it really gets cold i keep warm with boots and long leather gloves. It's a great transition look (and toasty too!)
