Dress Up Your Winter Coat
Bundling up for winter doesn’t have to mean losing your sense of style. Why not consider your everyday coat a blank canvas and have some fun with eye-catching accessories? Try a dramatic brooch or a cluster of smaller pins on a lapel. Another idea is to cinch your wool coat with a substantial leather belt — you’ll instantly define your waist and look more tailored. And lastly, choose scarves and gloves in contrasting colors, especially if your coat is a neutral hue like black or camel.

Want a great coat makeover? Replace your buttons! That little tip may sound overly simple, but it really isn't. I had several pea coats that I absolutely adored, but they were monochromatic. I replaced the buttons on a wolf grey wool pea coat with antique pearl buttons, giving it a classic, almost vintage appeals. I chose to replace the buttons on my navy wool pea coat with kelly green buttons to coordinate with a few favorite winter accessories (I also blanket stitched the edges of the coat in the same color). The splash of color in such a classic piece of clothing gives it a nice edge. Yet another wool pea coat (this one black) was quickly transformed by a touch of metallic thread. Using the standard setting on my sewing machine, I stitched a line of silver, gold, and copper threads around the sleeves and bottom of the coat. I then used touches of metalic paint marker to accent the black buttons. The decoration is very subtle. Bottom Line: Have Fun!
