What to Wear to a Summer Wedding...
...when you’re not the bride.

Even if it’s not your big day, you do want to look fabulous. Follow our guide for what to wear — and what not to wear — when it comes to summer wedding fashion etiquette.
Color. The cardinal rule of summer’s weddings is simple: Don’t wear white. That’s exclusively for the bride on her big day. But that’s no reason for you to be a fashion wallflower. Leave the little black cocktail dress in the closet, and break out a beautiful floral print or brightly colored dress. The occasion is fun and festive, so your look should be too.
Shoes. If you know the wedding is outdoors, the cocktail hour is on the lawn or you’ll be dancing under a tent, don’t wear spiky heels. You’ll end up sinking into the grass, ruining the lawn — and your party shoes! Sparkly metallic flats or wedges can be just as dressy as heels.
Fabric. Natural materials are much more breathable than synthetics, so try to find lovely linen, dressy cotton or stylish voile to wear, especially for daytime or outdoor events. You’ll be able to spend more time dancing and less time worrying about sweating if you’re not overheated.
Layers. On the other hand, even in warm weather, evenings can get chilly — especially when air conditioners are cranked to high. Plan ahead so you’ll be prepared for a cold situation. After all, your date’s jacket looks better on him than drowning on you. And an elegant shawl in a rich color like eggplant or fuchsia, or an interesting texture such as silk organza can actually enhance your outfit.
