The Best Bangs for Your Buck

Celebrity stylist Gretchen Monahan helps you create the perfect hairdo

From layered and wispy to short and blunt, bangs have recently become a hot hairstyling trend. But before heading out to the salon, consider the following advice from celebrity stylist Gretchen Monahan.

Envision your look. Like a great dress that flatters your figure, bangs can help accentuate or play down certain areas of your face. “The first thing you need to think about is what version of the bang you want,” says Monahan. For example, if you’re looking to elongate or create the illusion of narrowness, Monahan suggests a light bang with the hint of a middle part. Side-swept bangs create drama and accentuate the eyes, while the heavy blunt cut creates a fashion-forward, youthful appearance.

Take stock of your strands Once you understand your goals, it’s important to take into account your hair type and styling practices. If your hair is wavy or frizzy and you don’t like to blow-dry, then a blunt cut is not for you. Fine hair can benefit from the layering of a side-swept look, which helps create the illusion of volume, suggests Monahan. “And don’t forget to consider maintenance” she adds. “A blunt bang needs to be trimmed every two to three weeks, whereas a side-swept bang is more forgiving.”

Know how to work them. Before you leave the salon with your fabulous new look, be sure to ask the stylist what type of brush is best to use when blowing out your bangs. Large round brushes and paddle brushes are usually the best because they can help add volume, shape layers or help straighten your hair. A tip that Monahan gives her clients is to blow-dry their bangs before the rest of the hair. “A lot of women have cowlicks, so it’s important to get the bang styled first before one forms.”
