Pump Up the Volume

Celebrity stylist Gretchen Monahan on getting your hair to reach new heights

If you aren’t blessed with full, luscious locks, then the search for volume is a constant in your life. But getting volumized hair doesn’t have to be a battle: With the right products, achieving it is a breeze. Here are some of celebrity stylist Gretchen Monahan’s secrets.

Shower your strands with love. Many of us don’t realize that styling actually begins when you wash your hair. “You have to start with a volumizing shampoo,” Monahan says. “It has ingredients that make the hair feel thicker and fuller.” And don’t think that skipping conditioner will help, either. “Volumizing conditioners are lightweight and formulated to keep hair from lying flat,” Monahan adds. The end result: Your hair gets the total treatment and is ready to reach its full potential.

Style and dry. Apply a small amount of mousse or gel to damp hair at the roots. “Work it in thoroughly and evenly, but don’t cross the line — just put in a light amount,” Monahan cautions. Too much styling product can have a negative effect; your hair will become weighed down, heavy and flat. Next, hold your hair at a 90° angle as you dry it. “Alternatively you can work upside down,” Monahan says. Large round brushes drawn from the root to the tip of the hair will also help create volume.

Get an afternoon lift. To put some oomph back in locks that are suffering a midday meltdown, try shaking out your hair and spritzing it with spray. “Don’t massage the hair too much or the natural oils on your fingers will weigh it down,” Monahan cautions. A bit of teasing is another good fast fix.
