How to Wear Red

Whether you wear it boldly, demurely or in support of a good cause, don’t shy away from this attention-getting color.

Hey, you in the black dress — think you can’t pull off a look-at-me color like red? Forget those old-fashioned notions about skin tones and age. Everyone can wear red, style experts say. From delicate hues to va-va-voom shades, celebrate any occasion with the color of passion. The hot trend is bright poppy reds and florals, says BagSnob.com’s Tina Craig. And be daring with your makeup too. “With the popularity of the television show Mad Men, rich, matte red lipsticks are all the rage,” says Michelle Madhok of the shopping Website SheFinds.com Here are three ways to go red.

If You’re Feeling Bold Want to turn heads? There’s nothing like a little red dress to grab attention. Opt for a timeless shift that’s not too clingy, suggests Madhok. “A too-tight dress sends the wrong message,” she says. Or try a comfy sweater dress.

Then stick to neutral tones — white, black, gray, even chocolate brown — for accessories. Neutrals complement and don’t compete with red, unlike other bright colors, which may clash. Madhok pairs red with gold accessories for a luxe look, but silver can work too.

If You Want a More Subtle Look If you’re not quite ready to go all out in red, you can ease yourself into the color. A flash of red in a jacket lining, for example, is always a surprise. Wear crimson ballet flats or slingbacks with black-and-white outfits for instant chic. Or tie a red scarf around your neck to pep up a white shirt and jeans on the weekend. At work, wear a red tank top under a neutral cardigan or a pin-striped blazer. Or pin a red brooch onto a plain black dress. “Costume jewelry is a fantastic and inexpensive way to experiment,” says Madhok. “Try bangles, chandelier earrings or an oversize cocktail ring for a splash of color.”

If You Want to Do Good While You Look Good Red isn’t just the color of love — it’s also the symbol for a healthy heart. Every February, you can show your support for the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day — which will be February 5, 2010. Putting on a red outfit is a great way to raise awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S. Visit the Website at ShopHeart.org to find clothes, accessories and more. Proceeds fund research into every aspect of cardiovascular disease.
