How to Keep Your Hair Color Looking Great
Four simple steps to prevent fading and brassiness.

When we color our hair, chemicals in the dye cause the cuticle, or tilelike outer layer, of each strand of hair to become rough and uneven, allowing color to be deposited in the center of the hair shaft. When the hair is rinsed, the cuticle smooths down and seals in the color. In the summer, sun, chlorine, salt and excessive shampooing cause the cuticle to become rough, allowing color to “fall out.”
To help prevent this process:
- Rinse your hair with cool water after swimming.
- Use color-preserving shampoos and conditioners. They’re gentler and help the cuticle remain smooth.
- Consider investing in a color-conditioning mask and using it two or more times a week, depending on how dry your hair becomes.
- Don’t depend on products with UV protection to maintain color. They’re great at keeping your hair and scalp healthy, but when it comes to fading and brassiness, wearing a hat offers more protection.
