How to Be a Stylin’ Mommy in Summer
By Whitney Wingerd

I’ll never forget the day, about four months after my son was born, when I decided to take a quick trip to Babies “R” Us. With the demands of caring for a newborn, I’d been more or less trapped inside my house all winter, and I didn’t think much of the fact that I was wearing a tattered old T–shirt — and maternity shorts.
Just my luck: I ran into a former co–worker in the checkout line. I still don’t know what’s more appalling, the fact that he didn’t recognize me at first or that once he did, he paused and said something like, “Wow, Whitney… you really look like you had a baby.” Yikes. I was mortified. But the truth was, I looked so tired and grungy that I wasn’t even myself anymore.
Every mom has been in the same position at one time or another — sleepless nights, spit–up down the shirt, and drowning in the seemingly endless tasks of taking care of your children. When you’re a mom, the kids come first. And our appearances often come last. But it’s important to spend a couple of minutes each day on you. And not for the shallow, I–need–to–look–pretty kind of reasons. It’s about being confident on both the inside and out so you can be a happier, better mom — and individual — for your children. To me, and to many of my friends who are moms, looking good is all about keeping it simple and easy. Here are my tips for being a stylish mommy, even when the heat is on.
Fashion
A flowing skirt is comfortable, feminine and flattering. To avoid looking too much like a hippie, it’s best to pair a loose skirt with a formfitting (but not tight!) tank top with solid straps. You will look chic and still be able to carry a baby and herd a toddler at the same time. Solid colors and A–line cuts look grown–up and classy. You’ll have a put–together outfit in an instant, and the cotton will keep you cool. You can find great deals at stores like Target and Old Navy. I’ve also found some wonderful stretch cotton skirts over the years at stores like Gap and Ann Taylor that have become staples in my summer wardrobe. Pair your ensemble with a pair of cute flip–flops — like trendy Havaianas — and you’re good to go.Hair
My philosophy on hair: There’s no need to mess with it if you don’t want to. That especially holds true for moms who have hair that tends to react badly to humidity. (Frizz, anyone?) For ease and convenience, throw in a dab of gel to tame your locks and put it up in a ponytail. Here’s another option, from my friend Christine: “I’m all about bobby pins once the weather gets nice. With just a few of them you can do a great casual bun. You don’t even have to blow–dry your hair — just let it air–dry for a few minutes, wrap, pin in a few places, spray with a bit of leave–in conditioner — or a touch of mousse — and you’re done. Later, if you take the bun out, you usually have some bouncy curls going on!”
Face
Make it part of your morning ritual to use a tinted moisturizer with SPF — especially in the summertime when it’s vital to stay protected from the sun’s rays. The tint provides just a hint of color that acts as a light foundation to even out your skin tone. You should also wear an SPF lip balm that offers both shine and UV protection.About the author: Wingerd is a mother, writer and editor. Also exercise, it's good for you and it sets a good example for the kids. Be who you want your kids to be. They learn no by what you tell them but by what you show them!
