Healthy Nails, Every Day

Getting great-looking, healthy nails starts long before the polish is applied. Deborah Selby, co-owner of Elements Spa and Salon in Springfield, Ill. offers these simple, money-saving tips.
- Treat nails gently. To prevent damage, don’t use your fingernails to pick, poke or pry things. “Keep a metal nail file in your purse and your desk to use as a tool instead of your nails,” says Selby.
- Don’t bite your nails or pick at your cuticles. In addition to looking less than lovely, this can damage the nail bed. “Use an excellent-quality cuticle nipper instead,” suggests Selby. “And moisturize those cuticles!”
- Maintain nails regularly. Trim your fingernails and clean under them daily. Keep an emery board and buffer near the spot where you read or watch TV for regular smoothing sessions.
- Keep hands and nails moisturized. Use a good-quality lotion on your hands, and rub it into nails and cuticles. “For extra softening, apply moisturizer, then put on cotton-lined gloves before gardening, doing dishes or using cleaning products,” suggests Selby. Hate to wear gardening gloves? “Run your nails across a bar of soap before you work in the dirt,” she says. Voilà! Easy post-gardening cleanup.
