Celebrity stylist Gretta Monahan on treating your tresses properly.

Overzealous blow-drying and teasing can wreak havoc on hair, but when it comes down to real hair crimes, it may be a surprise to learn what tops the naughty list. Celebrity stylist Gretta Monahan gives us a rundown of the three things she tells her clients to avoid.
The nocturnal ponytail. If you’ve been told that putting your hair in a ponytail at night will help it look full the next morning, consider what you are doing to your strands. “Sleeping with a ponytail is something you should never do,” Monahan says. Between the constant movement on the pillow and pulling of an elastic, hair will break or be ripped out. If you feel it’s neccessary to have your hair pulled away from your face while you sleep, Monahan suggests a turban or a loose scrunchie. “And section your hair so that the front and back are separated; this will help minimize tension,” she says.
Close encounters of the heated kind. When it comes to blow-drying, Monahan urges her clients not to hold the dryer too close to their hair. “I always tell people to keep the nozzle on their dryer because it creates a natural barrier between the heat coil and the hair,” she says. In addition to minimizing heat damage, the nozzle helps improve the quality of the blow-dry because it aligns the flow of air with the hair cuticle.
Skimping on trims. Monahan’s final no-no: not getting a regular trim. “People are always asking me if they need a trim while they are trying to grow out their hair,” she says. “I explain that hair is like a rope that is unraveling. If you don’t trim the end, you risk having split ends that can run up the shaft.” A regular trim will not only make your hair look better, but also help it stay healthy.
