Expert Advice: Gorgeous Gray

Here’s how to keep those silver strands sparkling.

“So many people today are embracing their gray hair, and I think it’s a wonderful, natural look,” says Suave celebrity hairstylist Luke O’Connor. But maintaining that lovely gray mane comes with a few challenges.

How can I keep all-gray or partly gray hair looking beautiful?

“You should be willing to change your hairstyle a bit once you go gray,” says O’Connor. “Experiment! Sometimes a shorter cut or a new style can make all the difference.” Also, choose hair products that are designed to moisturize, because gray hair tends to be dry. “I recommend using Suave® Humectant Shampoo and Conditioner,” he says. “It’s designed to replenish moisture in dry or damaged hair.”

How can I give my gray hair more shine?

“If you blow-dry your hair, be sure to use a nozzle to direct the airflow. Dry from root to tip; it will help control frizz,” says O’Connor. Styling products can also prevent frizz and add shine. “Apply a dollop of Suave® Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream before you leave the house,” he suggests.

How do I deal with the texture changes that can come along with gray hair?

“When hair loses color, it may feel drier and coarser that it used to be,” says O’Connor. “Step up your conditioning treatment to restore moisture and nourish gray hair.” And you don’t have to spend extra at the salon to achieve a deep condition. “Leave in Suave® Humectant Conditioner, and wrap your hair in a hot towel for about 15 minutes,&rduo; says the stylist. “The deep treatment will leave your hair feeling soft.”

How can I protect my gray hair from the elements?

According to O’Connor, you need to shield your hair from chlorine — which can cause hair to look yellow — and the sun. “If you are going for a swim, tie your hair on top of your head so that it doesn’t get soaked in chlorine,” he says. “And if you know you are going to be out in the sun all day, grab a hat or a scarf for at least some protection when the sun is at its strongest.”
