Suave hair expert Luke O’Connor on the importance of communicating with your stylist

It’s hard to know how your hair will look when you try a new stylist. But according to Luke O’Connor — celebrity stylist, Suave hair expert and co-owner of LuKaRo salon in Beverly Hills — there are a few things you can do to make getting a cut virtually foolproof.
Do Your Homework
No matter how many friends recommend a salon, you need to be sure that the stylist you will be working with is right for you. “Everyone has a niche or a specialty,” O’Connor says. Before you make an appointment, call the salon and find out if the person that you are booking with has expertise cutting your type of hair. “You can also look on the Internet,” O’Connor adds. “A lot of salons profile their stylists, so that’s a great way to see what they have done and what their specialties are.”
Be Bold
If you have admired someone’s cut from afar, speak up! “Just ask where she her hair done,” O’Connor urges. It’s a great way to break out of a haircut rut by trying a new stylist.
Show and Tell
Don’t be embarrassed to bring a photo with you. “So many clients come into my salon and apologize for bringing a picture, but a picture is the first step toward good, clear communication,” O’Connor says. Not only does a picture tell the stylist what you’re interested in, it also makes it possible for him or her to speak to you realistically about what is and isn’t possible for your hair type. “And be sure the stylist asks you about your lifestyle and how much time you commit to styling,” he adds. You want someone who is going to give you a cut you can really live with.
Just Say No
Finally, when you are having that initial conversation, don’t forget to let the stylist know what you don’t want. “It sounds silly, but telling a stylist what you don’t want can be even more important than telling him what you do,” O’Connor says. “Just think about it: Unless you tell someone that you absolutely don’t want bangs or layers, there is still a chance that’s what you’ll get.”

I have Au natural auburn hair. I cut it myself. It is fine, straight and longer than shoulder length. No perms here. Past experiences have proven that beauticians can't cut it right and perms make my hair a terrible looking frizzy mess. Not only am I saving a lot of money but saving myself from ugliness, frustrations and headaches from doing unnecessary things to my hair. And people tell me all the time about how absolutely beautiful it is. Ladies, just leave it alone and appreciate what mother nature gave you.
