Get Moving on Varicose Veins

Nothing can ruin a beautiful pair of gams like gnarled, enlarged veins.

varicose veins

Caused when veins loose their elasticity and allow blood to pool, varicose veins — and their milder cousin, spider veins — affect nearly a quarter of all American women. For most people, varicose veins are a cosmetic concern. That’s why when it comes to preventing them, doctors say the best defense is a good offense.

Age, gender and genetics all play a role in who gets varicose veins — but weight and activity level do too. Indeed, doctors say one of the best ways to prevent them is exercise: Brisk walking can help encourage blood circulation and improve muscle tone in your legs.

Here are some tips to start you off on the right foot.

  • Shake a leg. Avoid sitting or standing for long periods. Move around every 30 minutes or so to encourage blood flow.
  • Watch your weight. Shedding excess pounds will take unnecessary pressure off your veins.
  • Avoid high heels. Low-heeled shoes work calf muscles, which is good for your veins.
  • Lift your legs. Take several short breaks daily to elevate your legs above the level of your heart. For instance, lie down with your legs resting on three or four pillows.
  • Cross your heart, not your legs. Don’t sit with your legs crossed. This position can aggravate circulation problems.
