Fresh Spring Makeup
The best looks are simple, beautiful and utterly doable

Spring is the season to welcome change and freshness to your life. So why not take a peek into your makeup bag and see which products need to be replaced? A few simple changes to your makeup routine can make a noticeable difference in your appearance, without costing you time — or a lot of money. Makeup expert Ramy Gafni, creator of Ramy Beauty Therapy Cosmetics in New York City, shares his thoughts on springing into a new look.
Set a Foundation
Start by choosing the right foundation for your skin — both for your skin type (dry, oily or combination) and skin color. It sounds obvious, but, Gafni says, “nothing looks worse than wearing foundation that’s too light or too dark.” Test foundation by applying a little to your jawline not your hand or wrist, which is often not the same color as your face — and blending it in. “If the foundation appears invisible, it’s the correct color,” Gafni explains. “If you can see the streak of color, it’s not right. Good makeup is invisible.” As a rule, yellow-based foundations are easier to blend than pink-based ones, but go with whichever hue disappears on your skin.Enhance Your Eyes
For sparkle around the eyes, try a highlighter in a neutral, white, pale pink or flesh tone with a light shimmer, Gafni says. “Put it across the entire eye area — it’s especially effective around the tear ducts and across the eyelids — to wake up and brighten your eyes.” Be sure to avoid a common pitfall, though: using eyeliner or mascara on your lower lid or lashes. It drags the eye down.Multitask
If you want to pare down your routine, look for products that pull double duty. “I’m a big advocate of multipurpose products — that’s a true way to simplify,” says Gafni. “Use a concealer that’s also a moisturizer, or a concealer-moisturizer that has nutrients in it.”Blend In
Use the time you save with dual-benefit products to finish your face: “That’s one of the most common mistakes — women don’t take time to blend their makeup,” Gafni says. “If you take 10 seconds to blend it a little bit, so the eyeliner, foundation or blush isn’t a hard line, you’ll enhance the look. It will look like you’re not wearing makeup.” He advises using your fingers to blend makeup by rubbing in a circular, upward motion. “Your body heat warms the makeup, making it more blendable,” says Gafni. “You always have your fingers with you, and they’re the perfect size for blending everything from foundation to blush to concealer.”Light, Bright
“The colors for spring are bright pink, coral and mauves,” Gafni asserts. “They’re intense colors in sheer formulas that are very wearable.” Aim to perfect your complexion with a pink, coral or mauve cream gel blush and lip color, as well as neutral shimmers, such as white, peach or pale pink, near your eyes.Best Face Forward
For spring, Gafni says makeup should look “very clean and fresh-faced. It’s an almost unmade-up look — no eyeliner, no heavy lips.” Try sheer color on lips and a simple wash of color on the cheeks. If you want a bit more for evening, simply “add a pop of pink to the apples of your cheeks to get a more amped-up look,” he suggests. Only have a minute? Gafni recommends a little mascara and lip gloss, plus a sweep of blush across cheeks as the quickest makeup routine of all. “For working women and young moms, it’s a fast, easy way to look polished.”Rate this article:
