Five Things You Should Never Do to Your Skin

Ditch these bad skincare habits and watch your skin glow.

Remember how your parents nagged you as a teen: “Stop picking at your face!” Now that we’re adults, there are even more no-no’s when it comes to skin care. But we’ll let the experts do the nagging this time.

Don’t overstimulate. While removing dead skin cells can rev up your complexion, “too much of a good thing can be bad,” says Karen Torres, an esthetician at San Saba Spa in Austin. This can include too-frequent use of exfoliants, glycolic peels and microdermabrasion. So limit the use of exfoliating scrubs to three times a week, and speak to your skin-care specialist about how often your particular skin type can handle other procedures.

Don’t touch your face frequently during the day. This is a tough skincare habit to break, but Torres says it’s critical in the fight against blemishes.

Just say no to indoor tanning salons. More than a million Americans (70% are teen girls and young women) visit a tanning salon on an average day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Indoor tanning has been associated in some studies with a significant increase in the risk of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

Don’t use a grimy cell phone. Clean your cell phone regularly, Torres advises, as dirt and oil accumulate on it quickly.

Don’t scrub your skin! Overly aggressive cleaning harms delicate skin, says esthetician Susie Galvez, author of The Thrifty Girl’s Guide to Glamour (Polka Dot Press). “Use hydrating, protective skincare products,” she says. Such products soften your skin, allowing dirt to be gently wiped away.
