Five Reasons to Love Mousse

If mousse makes you think of bad high school perms, think again. Today’s version makes polished styles easy to create — quickly!

Everything ’80s is back in vogue, including that old standby, mousse. But today’s product is nothing like its predecessor from 20 years ago. “The mousse of the ’80s was often laden with alcohol and tended to leave hair crispy and overtextured or frizzy,” says Gretta Monahan, “spokestylist” for Dove® and Tim Gunn’s co–host on Bravo’s Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. Fortunately, this product has come a long way since then. Here are five reasons to love today’s different mousse products.

1. What’s your hair type? Yep. There’s a mousse for that. “Mousses are customized to type of hair: curly, wavy, straight, dense, fine, silky or textured,” Monahan says. Conditioning mousses work well for hair that is more textured or processed. A mousse that adds volume is perfect for fine, limp or very silky hair. And some boost natural body and help preserve volume throughout the day.

2. Curly or straight, mousse adds oomph to both styles. “In curly hair, mousse adds definition and bounce,” Monahan says. In straight hair, mousse provides body and hold. She notes that Dove® has two mousse offerings to cater to these hair textures. Dove® Curl & Sculpt Defining Mousse is great for defining curls and waves for soft, frizz–free style, while Body & Lift Volumizing Mousse creates fullness that lasts all day.

3.No more fearing the weather report. “Mousse conditions and smoothes hair, preventing frizz and providing protection from the elements,” Monahan says.

4. Mousse gives lift to flat hair. “Applying mousse before blow–drying works well,” she says. To add lift, use it at the roots of your hair. (A note of caution: Avoid overapplication, which can flatten hair and make it look stringy.)

5. Mousse can help you be more creative. “Try applying it to wet hair, and let your hair air–dry completely,” Monahan suggests. “Then throw in some hot rollers, which will give a beautiful finish to the ends while maintaining the natural wave or curl formation at the root.”

Another trick: Mix your mousse with gel, apply the mixture to wet hair, and let the hair air–dry almost completely. Finish with a blow–dryer on high heat, gently squeezing each section while drying. The result is a natural wave or curl with beautiful separation and no frizz. Try this on a day when you’ve got a little extra time, Monahan says. “The key to success with this technique is patience,” she adds. “Don’t rush!”
