Fall Fashion Shopper’s Guide

Whether you take risks or stick to the tried-and-true, here’s how to update your must-have wardrobe pieces this season.

Looking to freshen up your fall wardrobe? You’re in luck. Here are tips from fashion experts to suit your style, whether you prefer to stay with the classics or scoop up what’s hot off the runway.

Boots

If you’re a classic dresser, try a stack-heeled boot, with a sturdy sole, in shades of tobacco or steel, says FocusOnStyle.com founder Sharon Haver. They’re versatile — pair them with jeans or skirts — and they have staying power. Other shopping tips? Look for a clean shaft, no embellishment and a slightly elongated but rounded toe, says New York City stylist Jay del Rosario. Trendsetters should seek out scrunch-top, platform ankle or tall lace-up boots and can be more daring with color. Haver suggests buying those platform ankle boots in the brightest red or deepest purple.

Jeans

If your style is classic, try a pair of straight-leg jeans in a dark wash. Buy ones that fit well and fall just below your natural waist, Haver says. The trendy dresser should look for just the opposite: high waists and wider legs for a more trouserlike feel. Those who are really fashion-forward might consider pleats, Haver says.

Scarves

Del Rosario recommends scarves because they can change the look of an entire outfit. “The classic lady is all about luxury when it comes to scarves,” he notes. “She should seek out scarves made of cashmere, silk or blends of the two.” The trendier dresser should take advantage of cotton, cotton blends and wool scarves that come in a variety of colors, patterns and widths. “Look at scarves as a way to punch up the style quotient of a look,” del Rosario says. “The best part is that scarves in cotton and wool tend to be less expensive, so buy a bunch and experiment.”

Jackets and Coats

When it comes to jackets, there’s one golden rule: Don’t scrimp! “The jacket is often the first thing people see when you arrive and the last thing they see when you leave,” del Rosario says. “So invest in a great coat that not only looks wonderful and fits well but also keeps you warm.” If you prefer classics, you can’t go wrong with a trench or wool peacoat in camel or navy. Del Rosarios’s suggestion for the trendy dresser: “Rock a cape or capelet that simply drapes over the shoulder. These are comfortable and fashion-forward at the same time.”

It took me FOREVER to find the boots that I have now, miraculously I found them just after boxing day and there was only one pair left in my size! One thing I definitely have to do still is buy myself a new winter coat. I've been wearing the same one since before my son was born!
