Chic Ponytails
With just a little effort, this style can look truly pulled together and elegant, for day or night.
While many women love the ease and simplicity of throwing their hair back into a ponytail, this style can sometimes look just plain sloppy. But creating an elegant ponytail is easy with advice from Gretta Monahan, Dove® “spokestylist” and Tim Gunn’s talented co–host on Bravo’s Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. Check out these how–to tips, which take two minutes or less per look!
Start with sleek, ponytail–ready tresses. “I use Dove® Frizz Control Therapy Cream on wet hair, then blow it dry,” says Monahan. “This gives the hair a frizz–free foundation. Then after the ponytail is in place, I spray my hands with Dove® Extra Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement and slide my hands over the crown of the head and even down the ponytail itself. This will give just enough hold to the look.” If it’s an elaborate style, a quick blast of the hairspray a few inches away from your head will give an extra boost, she adds.
Sweet and low. High ponytails are best on high schoolers. For a more stylish look, try a ponytail that sits at the nape of the neck. Start by separating your hair into three sections: top, sides and back. Then lightly back–comb the crown of your hair, pulling it into a ponytail and securing. Smooth with a soft brush. “A nice flip at the ends will give some movement to the ’do,” says Monahan. “Occasionally I’ll add one or two small braids to the crown of the head and pull them back into the base with the rest of the hair. It’s a fun, of–the–moment way to play up a style without going overboard.”
Add extra polish for special occasions. Wrap a small section of hair from the bottom of the base of the ponytail around and tuck it into the elastic holder. “I prefer to use Blax hair elastics rather than the colored ponytail holders from days past. They allow for a more seamless and grown–up look,” Monahan says. Attach a rhinestone clip to the side of the ponytail for extra oomph.
Have fun with accessories. A slim headband or even a scarf can add dimension to a classic ponytail, says Monahan. “An understated yet glittery ponytail holder makes a nice statement,” she notes. “Goody has some really fabulous hair accessories right now, especially their Resort Glamour collection, available exclusively at Target,” says Monahan. “The Biscayne Ponytailer is a luscious flower that will add a little romance to your look,” she says. “And the Havana Headband is a silky–looking, scarf–style headband that says chic.”
