Bra Sizing: The Right Fit

We spend weeks looking for that perfect little black dress, but when it comes to bras — which we wear all day, every day — we’re not so picky. In fact, approximately 70% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. Whether you measure yourself or visit a professional bra-fitter (most major department stores have one), it’s time to find out your true size.
With a soft measuring tape, measure around your rib cage right under your bust for your band size, then around the fullest part of your bust for your cup size. No two styles fit the same, so try on a few different ones. If you’re large-busted, look for full-coverage bras and make sure you don’t slip out of the bottom when you lift your arms. If you’re petite with a smaller bust, choose structured cups to accentuate your body’s silhouette.
If you’ve chosen wisely, the band will sit around the smallest part of your back without riding up or creating bulges. Also, there shouldn’t be any spillage when you bend over, and the underwire should surround your breast for full support. Sit down when trying on the bra to make sure everything stays in place.
It’s important to follow similar guidelines when shopping for sports bras. Steer clear of athletic bras that compress the breast tissue. Instead, look for sports bras with cups — or even underwire, if necessary. You’ll get great support and a better shape, without the unhealthy pressure.
