15-Minute Styling — for Every Type of Hair

Celebrity stylist Luke O’Connor on how to give yourself a professional-looking hairstyle in a flash

No time to style? Think again. According to Luke O’Connor — celebrity stylist, Suave hair expert and co-owner of LuKaRo salon in Beverly Hills — all you need is 15 minutes to make any type of hair look fabulous. Here are some of his secrets for straight or curly hair of any length.

Straight Hair

If your hair is straight, start with a shampoo that will keep it smooth and shiny. “Straight hair looks great when it has volume, movement and shine. Suave® Vibrant Shine helps keep straight hair sleek and really pumps up the brilliance,” O’Connor says.

To add volume, spritz roots with a lifting spray or use gel lightly. “Gel is great because you can apply it where you need it to add volume and the rest of the hair is free to move naturally,” he says.

For a shorter bob with bangs — a popular look right now — O’Connor suggests using a flattening iron in the front and over the ears for a modern, youthful appearance. Longer hair benefits from some creativity with a traditional ponytail. “When I have only a few moments to change an actress moving from one scene to another, I often will tease a center ponytail to make it cute and young, then move it to the side for an exotic look.”

Curly Hair

Like straight hair, curly hair looks best when the texture is accepted and celebrated. “I like to convince clients with curly hair to embrace its natural state,” O’Connor says. The key is to make hair look its best; a product like Suave® Vibrant Shine Volumizing Mousse helps control frizz and define wave and curl.

One quick look O’Connor loves starts with turning the head upside down and blowing out hair until it is about 85% dry. “Then I section out a part of the hair from the middle of one eyebrow to the next and pin it up.” He finishes drying the rest of the hair with a diffuser or a dryer at a low setting. Next, using a medium-round brush, he wraps the top section around the brush, rolling it back toward the crown. “I use the brush like a roller; it creates curl, then I pull it forward to give smoothness,” he says. “The whole section falls over the entire head so everything looks completely styled.” The result is a fresh-from–the-salon look.
