THE CHEMISTRY OF MEN & WOMEN

Okay, he isn’t from Mars and you aren’t from Venus. But the two of you really do have your own separate skincare and haircare needs. Unilever top beauty scientist Ellen Shepard reveals the surprising beauty science behind men’s and women’s products.

THE SKIN YOU’RE IN

The average guy has 21½ square feet of skin, while the average gal has just under 19 square feet. When it comes to body wash, Shepard says, men like “clean-rinsing formulations that don’t leave a heavy residue.” Women have different concerns, including addressing the dryness and decreased elasticity that come with aging.

For Him: Dove® Men + Care® Clean Comfort Body Wash fights dryness, then rinses completely away.  Click here for where-to-buy info.

For Her: New Dove® Visible Care™ Replenishing Crème Body Wash reveals softer, smoother, firmer skin. Click here for where-to-buy info.

FACE FACTS

Believe it or not, men’s facial skin tends to suffer more abuse than women’s. “A man’s face is more exposed and more sensitive,” Shepard says. Shaving, which regularly scrapes off the top layer of cells, is to blame. One thing you both need: Daily sun protection.

For Him: Vaseline® MEN® Fast Absorbing Face and Body Lotion tackles skin dryness in 15 seconds. Click here for where to buy info.

For Her: Simple® Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15 perfect even for sensitive skin. Click here for where to buy info.

HEAD TO HEAD

And the tortured-tresses award goes to…the ladies. “Women need more conditioning because coloring and styling puts more stress on their hair,” Shepard says. Men’s scalps produce more oil than women’s do, so his shampoos may be more cleansing and less conditioning than hers.

For Her: Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Damage & Color Repair Nourishing Shampoo gently cleans the scalp and hair. Click here to buy it now.

For Him: Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Clean & Refresh Daily Anti-Dandruff 2 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner is cooling. Click here for where-to-buy info.

IT’S THE PITS

Guess who perspires more? He does, though scientists aren’t sure if this is because men have more sweat glands than women do, or if men’s sweat glands are more active. Men’s underarms are bigger, so their antiperspirant sticks are wider than women’s. And gals care more about wetness protection, while many guys are more concerned with odor control.

For Him: Degree® Men Fresh Deodorant comes in four scents. Click here to buy now.

For Her: Degree® Women Ultra Clear Deodorant & Antiperspirant won’t leave white residue on your clothes. Click here to buy now.

BY A NOSE

Women have a slightly better sense of smell than men do, especially as they get older. Women and men gravitate toward different fragrances, though scientists suspect these preferences aren’t inborn but learned. “Therefore, we tend to design scents that are more specifically associated with activities and experiences a specific gender enjoys,” Shepard says.

For Her: St. Ives® Energizing Citrus Body Wash wakes you up with the invigorating scents of citrus, mint, and eucalyptus. Click here to learn more.

For Him: Axe® Thai Massage Shower Gel has a relaxing grassy scent. Click here to buy it now.
